The Old Rectory

The Old Rectory is a Grade II Listed property nestled in the Somerset countryside. Originally built in the early 19th century, the Georgian house has undergone multiple extensions and additions over the years, which have diluted its architectural character.

As the current custodians of this exceptional asset, the clients aim to enhance both the historic and environmental quality of the site, through thoughtful and sensitive interventions, that respond to their context while adding architectural interest and curiosity.

Working alongside Landstory, we are developing a phased masterplan for the property and gardens.

The initial phase, currently under construction, converts the previously fragmented and utilitarian gardens, into an inviting and purposeful landscape. The proposal retains the original walled garden while adding a series of new greenhouses and creates a new natural pool and outdoor sauna. This first phase also includes the refurbishment of the Georgian house.

The new interventions share a consistent volumetric and material language, characterized by mono-pitch, lean-to structures built with low-carbon and long-lasting materials. This approach creates a cohesive architectural pattern, setting out principles for the design of later interventions within the property.

Later phases will include two extensions to the Georgian house, and the conversion and retrofit of an existing agricultural barn into a flexible studio space to host events.
